Just like becoming a Hollywood starlet, it can also be difficult to break into this field. Fortunately, with hard work, it can be done. Take care of your voice and tune your skill level. Between acting gigs, voice-over work is a common thing to do among actors on-screen and off. Many actors who want to break into the business take voice acting classes. There are special techniques used in voice acting, and these skills help animated characters come to life. It is not merely speaking, or making funny voices for cartoon talking dogs. Your previous skills as an actor will be challenged. Make sure you put together a demo tape. If you are new to voice-acting, you may want to hire a voice-acting coach to help you out with this part of your resume. It should be between one and a half minutes and two, while two minutes is the maximum that your tape should be. You may want to record a few commercial segments as well, with topics that complement the tones of your voice. To show off your versatility, try a few character voices. Do not repeat one of those voices, and make sure that you can distinguish between each one. Just a line or two should do the trick as long as it is done well and conviction. Doing various types of voices will only further impress a casting director. Some companies go with outsourced voice-overs, so make sure that you check every possible resource for freelancing gigs. A casting director will not take you seriously if you come into an audience, or have a tape handy, without proper representation. An audition is, however, always necessary.
